SCCM client "Active" or not.
What criteria is used by SCCM to determine if a client is "Active" or not? I guess it has something to do with DDR's but I cannot find any relevant information.

A client is active if it discovered and transfers information back and forth.
Network Discovery
Heartbeat (updates ddrs, doesn't create them)
System Discovery

All these should detect a working machine or active client, depending on the discovery.
Active also refers to a client that doesn't have the uninstall flag checked.
Truly an active client is one that has HW inventory, sends data back and forth to the MP.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Hi, and thanks for your answer, but I really would like to know the exact rules that SCCM uses to determine if a client is active or not.

Discovery can be done of computer accouns that are not in usefrom AD, are they then marked as not active?
IfHW inventory is one criteria, is there a time limit for how oldthe latestinventory must be before the computer is considered as non active?

Hi,

Taken from the help file.

Clients are marked inactive in two ways:

  • When a client is flagged as obsolete it is also marked as inactive.
  • Clients can be marked inactive by the client health tool if the tool is configured to mark clients as inactive

Nice, but sorry, not asatisfying explanation.
Even if the client health tool not is installed, you get systems marked asactive=no. And we have a lot of systems that are not obsolete and marked active=no.

This seems to be a quite tricky question. Where are all the expersts when we need them? :-)

I'm gonna bump this, as I'd like to know the answer as well..

We have clients that are online and all, but still marked as active=no

if there is an issue with client flag is 1 (client is YES) and Active flag is 0 (Active is NO), then try disabling Client Install Flag under Site Maintenance tab.

once this done Initiate Branch Distribution Point on client system and check (initiation is required only to speedup this process).

this worked for me.

I have the same question. What actually marks the client as Active = no

The system is not obsolete, client is installed. Does Config Manager use a set number of days that it does not see a heartbeat? if so, what is that number, or is it a LastHardwareScan day?
